The Ottawa Senators open their 2026-27 NHL season against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, October 3, setting up an early-season Battle of Ontario at Scotiabank Arena.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET in Toronto. It will be Ottawa’s first regular-season game of the campaign and the ninth time in franchise history that the Senators have opened a season against their provincial rivals.
Toronto enters the matchup looking for a response after beginning its season with a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. William Nylander scored both Maple Leafs goals in the defeat, while Toronto struggled with turnovers in its own zone.
That gives Saturday’s Senators vs Maple Leafs matchup plenty of early intrigue.
Ottawa wants to make an immediate statement in its season opener. Toronto wants to avoid another home loss.

| Toronto storyline | Looking to respond after losing its opener to Montreal |
The Senators begin their season with three straight road games, visiting Toronto, Boston and Detroit before returning to Ottawa for their home opener against Philadelphia.
The Maple Leafs did plenty of good things in their opening game, but the result highlighted some familiar early-season issues.
Toronto started quickly against Montreal and scored inside the opening minute through William Nylander. The Maple Leafs also controlled much of the early play.
However, defensive-zone turnovers proved costly.
Head coach Jim Hiller identified those mistakes as one of Toronto’s main problems after the 3-2 defeat. Montreal eventually scored three unanswered goals before Nylander pulled Toronto back within one late in the third period.
Against Ottawa, the Leafs will need to be cleaner with the puck.
The Senators possess enough offensive talent to punish mistakes, particularly through Tim Stützle, Drake Batherson and their revamped top six.
If Toronto wants an immediate response, William Nylander looks like the obvious player to watch.
Nylander scored both Maple Leafs goals against Montreal, including Toronto’s first goal of the 2026-27 campaign.
His second came late in the third period after combining with Easton Cowan.
That performance makes Nylander one of Toronto’s biggest scoring threats heading into Saturday.
He already looks comfortable offensively and remains one of the Maple Leafs’ best players at creating opportunities off the rush.
After scoring twice in the opener, Nylander enters the Ottawa game with confidence.
If Toronto generates chances around the Senators’ net, he could once again be heavily involved.
Despite Nylander’s excellent start, Ottawa’s defensive game plan will still begin with Auston Matthews.
The Toronto captain remains one of the NHL’s most dangerous shooters and the central piece of the Maple Leafs offence.
Toronto has also changed considerably around him.
The Maple Leafs enter the season with several new faces, including goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Gavin McKenna, Nick Paul, Jack Roslovic, Teddy Blueger and Colton Sissons. Developing chemistry quickly has been identified as one of Toronto’s biggest early-season challenges.
Matthews will be expected to help stabilize that new-look group.
Ottawa cannot afford to give him clean shooting opportunities in the slot or allow Toronto’s power play to repeatedly set him up in dangerous areas.
Another name Canadian hockey fans will be watching closely is Gavin McKenna.
The No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft made his NHL debut against Montreal, recording one shot in 15:19 of ice time.
The 18-year-old is joining a Toronto lineup where he does not immediately need to become the main offensive star.
With Matthews, Nylander and John Tavares around him, McKenna has experienced players who can take much of the pressure off the rookie.
Saturday’s Battle of Ontario offers another good test.
Ottawa plays a physical, competitive style and will not give the young forward much time with the puck.
How McKenna adjusts could become one of the most interesting individual storylines of the game.
Ottawa begins the season looking noticeably different from the team that reached the playoffs in 2025-26.
The biggest change is the departure of former captain Brady Tkachuk, who was traded to the Florida Panthers during the offseason.
That leaves Ottawa searching for both offensive production and leadership.
Tim Stützle now becomes even more important.
Stützle led Ottawa with 34 goals last season, while Drake Batherson finished just behind him with 33. Dylan Cozens added 28 and Shane Pinto scored 23.
Without Tkachuk, Ottawa will need those players to carry a larger share of the offence.
Stützle is probably the most important Senator to watch against Toronto.
His speed can create serious problems through the neutral zone, particularly if the Maple Leafs turn over the puck and allow Ottawa to attack quickly.
While Stützle is likely to drive much of Ottawa’s offence, Drake Batherson should also be closely watched around the Toronto net.
Batherson scored 33 goals and recorded 71 points last season, finishing second on the Senators in both goals and points.
With Tkachuk gone, there is an opportunity for Batherson to take on an even larger offensive role.
If Toronto struggles with defensive-zone turnovers again, Batherson has the finishing ability to make those mistakes expensive.
The Senators did not simply lose Tkachuk and stand still.
They added William Eklund, who recorded 53 points with San Jose last season, and Andre Burakovsky has also been tested alongside Stützle and Batherson.
That could give Ottawa several different ways to attack Toronto.
A projected top six featuring players such as Stützle, Batherson, Eklund, Dylan Cozens and Fabian Zetterlund gives the Senators plenty of speed and offensive ability.
The question is how quickly those new combinations can develop chemistry in a real regular-season game.
The most important matchup may not involve one specific player.
It could simply come down to Toronto’s ability to protect the puck against Ottawa’s forwards.
Against Montreal, the Maple Leafs generated offensive pressure but hurt themselves with defensive-zone turnovers. Toronto coach Jim Hiller called those mistakes the team’s “Achilles’ heel” in the opener.
Ottawa has the players to exploit similar errors.
Stützle is dangerous in transition. Batherson can finish. Eklund adds another creative option.
If Toronto repeatedly loses possession in dangerous areas, Ottawa could generate scoring chances without needing long stretches of offensive-zone pressure.
Ottawa’s goaltending is another major storyline entering the new season.
Linus Ullmark finished last season strongly, posting a 12-4-3 record with a 2.51 goals-against average over his final 19 games after the Olympic break.
The Senators will hope that version of Ullmark carries into 2026-27.
That could become particularly important against Toronto.
Matthews and Nylander can turn small defensive mistakes into goals, so Ottawa may need Ullmark to make several difficult saves if the Maple Leafs create sustained pressure.
Toronto does not need to completely change its approach after one defeat.
But several areas clearly need attention.
Reduce turnovers. This is the biggest one. Montreal punished Toronto for mistakes in its own zone.
Get Matthews involved. Toronto becomes far harder to defend when Matthews is consistently generating quality shots.
Use Nylander’s form. After scoring twice in the opener, Toronto should continue getting the puck to Nylander in dangerous areas.
Help Bobrovsky. Sergei Bobrovsky made 21 saves against Montreal in his Maple Leafs debut. Toronto cannot repeatedly ask its new goaltender to deal with chances created by defensive mistakes.
Build chemistry. With so many new players in the lineup, Toronto may need time to become completely comfortable. Every game matters in developing those combinations.
Ottawa enters the game with a different set of priorities.
Attack Toronto’s turnovers. The Senators should look to transition quickly whenever Toronto loses possession.
Use Stützle’s speed. He can stretch the ice and force Toronto’s defence into uncomfortable situations.
Keep Matthews away from dangerous areas. Giving Matthews space near the slot is rarely a successful strategy.
Get traffic in front of Bobrovsky. Montreal created problems by putting bodies and pucks around Toronto’s goaltender.
Stay disciplined. Giving Toronto repeated power-play opportunities could allow Matthews and Nylander to take control of the game.
Several players stand out heading into Saturday.
Nylander has the hottest hand after scoring twice against Montreal.
Matthews remains Toronto’s biggest pure scoring threat and can change a game with very little space.
Ottawa’s leading goal scorer from last season will be expected to carry an even larger offensive load this year.
Batherson’s 33 goals last season show that he is more than capable of punishing Toronto if opportunities appear.
Based on the opening game, Nylander is Toronto’s in-form scoring threat, while Stützle is the Senator most likely to drive Ottawa’s offence.
This matchup looks particularly interesting because the two teams are entering it from very different situations.
Toronto has already experienced the intensity of a regular-season rivalry game and now has the opportunity to correct the mistakes it made against Montreal.
Ottawa, meanwhile, will be playing its first game of the season and trying to establish its identity without Tkachuk.
Toronto has the benefit of home ice and elite offensive talent.
Ottawa has speed, depth and a strong opportunity to attack a Leafs team still developing chemistry after an active offseason.
The opening period could be especially important.
If Toronto starts quickly and avoids the turnovers that hurt it against Montreal, the Leafs can put Ottawa under immediate pressure.
If the Senators survive that early push and begin generating opportunities in transition, this Battle of Ontario could become very difficult to predict.
Senators vs Maple Leafs is one of the standout Canadian NHL games of the opening week.
Toronto is searching for its first positive response after losing 3-2 to Montreal, while Ottawa begins a new season with new responsibilities for Stützle, Batherson and the rest of its core.
There are stars on both sides, a long-standing provincial rivalry and plenty of early-season questions.
Can Toronto clean up its defensive mistakes?
Will Matthews find his first big performance of the season?
Can Stützle lead Ottawa’s offence without Tkachuk?
And will Nylander continue his strong scoring start?
