Hutson vs Hutson: Canadiens-Capitals Game Brings Brothers Together for First NHL Showdown

The Montreal Canadiens face the Washington Capitals tonight, but the biggest storyline goes beyond the final score. For the first time, Lane Hutson and Cole Hutson will play against each other in the NHL.

The Canadiens visit Washington at 7:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday night, setting up a rare brother-versus-brother matchup between two young defensemen who are quickly becoming important players for their respective teams.

For Lane, the game comes less than 24 hours after another impressive performance for Montreal. For Cole, it is an opportunity to face his older brother on the biggest stage of their careers.

And for hockey fans, it adds another layer to an already intriguing Canadiens-Capitals matchup.

Lane Hutson Enters the Game in Strong Form

Lane Hutson could hardly have asked for a better performance before facing his brother.

The Canadiens defenseman recorded a goal and an assist in Montreal’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.

Hutson scored his first goal of the season on the power play before assisting Josh Anderson later in the game.

He finished the night with two points as Montreal survived a Buffalo comeback and eventually won in the shootout.

Cole Caufield also had a goal and an assist, while Zachary Bolduc scored the decisive shootout goal for the second consecutive game.

Montreal now heads directly to Washington with some momentum, although playing on consecutive nights will make the Capitals matchup more demanding.

Lane and Cole Hutson Have Never Faced Each Other Before

What makes tonight’s meeting particularly interesting is that this isn’t simply their first NHL matchup.

Lane and Cole have never played against each other at any level.

Lane, 22, established himself as one of the NHL’s most exciting young defensemen after winning the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 2024-25.

Cole, 20, is now beginning to establish himself with Washington.

The brothers are extremely close and regularly speak after games, but tonight there will be no sharing advice until the final horn.

For at least 60 minutes, they’ll be opponents.

A Different Challenge for Montreal

The emotional Hutson storyline will attract attention, but Montreal still has a difficult game to play.

The Canadiens are entering the second half of a back-to-back after Tuesday’s win against Buffalo.

That could become important as the game progresses.

Montreal allowed Buffalo to erase a 3-1 deficit in the third period Tuesday before eventually recovering in the shootout. Against Washington, protecting a lead will be just as important as creating one.

The Canadiens will need to manage their energy carefully, especially after playing overtime and a shootout less than 24 hours earlier.

Cole Caufield Remains One of Montreal’s Biggest Threats

Another player to watch is Cole Caufield.

The Canadiens forward scored against Buffalo and continues to provide Montreal with one of its most dangerous finishing options.

His chemistry with captain Nick Suzuki remains central to Montreal’s attack, while Hutson’s creativity from the blue line gives the Canadiens another way to generate scoring chances.

If Montreal can establish its power play and create space for Caufield, Washington could have trouble containing the Canadiens’ skill.

Alex Ovechkin Gives Washington Its Own Major Storyline

The Hutson brothers may dominate the buildup, but Alex Ovechkin remains impossible to ignore.

Every Capitals game involving Ovechkin attracts attention, and Montreal’s young defense will once again be tested by one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history.

Ovechkin also enters the game approaching another franchise milestone, sitting within reach of becoming Washington’s all-time leader in assists.

For Lane Hutson and the Canadiens defense, keeping Washington’s biggest attacking threats away from dangerous scoring areas will be one of the keys to the game.

Canadiens Need to Avoid Another Third-Period Collapse

Tuesday’s victory came with a warning.

Montreal appeared to be in control with a 3-1 lead against Buffalo, only for the Sabres to score twice in just over a minute early in the third period.

The Canadiens eventually escaped with two points, but similar mistakes could prove costly against Washington.

Montreal must be more composed when protecting a lead.

That means controlling the puck through the neutral zone, avoiding unnecessary turnovers and limiting the amount of time Washington spends around the Canadiens’ net.

Can Lane Hutson Win the First Battle Between the Brothers?

There will be plenty of time for Lane and Cole Hutson to compare notes after the game.

Before then, both will want bragging rights.

Lane enters the matchup as the more established NHL player and is coming off a two-point performance. Cole gets the advantage of playing at home with Washington.

Their individual battle won’t determine the result by itself, but every shift they share should attract attention.

For Canadian hockey fans, it gives an October regular-season game the feeling of something more memorable.

Canadiens vs Capitals: Players to Watch

Lane Hutson, Canadiens: Coming off a goal and an assist against Buffalo and now preparing to face his younger brother for the first time.

Cole Caufield, Canadiens: One of Montreal’s most dangerous scorers and another player who recorded two points Tuesday night.

Zachary Bolduc, Canadiens: Has delivered the decisive shootout goal in two consecutive Montreal wins.

Cole Hutson, Capitals: The Washington rookie gets his first opportunity to play against his older brother.

Alex Ovechkin, Capitals: Still the player Montreal cannot afford to lose track of around the offensive zone.

What to Expect Tonight

There are plenty of reasons to watch Canadiens vs Capitals tonight.

Montreal is trying to build momentum after a dramatic win. Washington presents another difficult test. Ovechkin remains one of hockey’s biggest attractions.

But the storyline most fans will remember is much simpler.

Lane Hutson versus Cole Hutson.

Two brothers who have spent years talking hockey with each other will finally line up on opposite sides.

When the puck drops in Washington tonight, the Hutson family won’t have to decide which game to watch.

For the first time, both brothers will be playing in the same one.
