The Saskatchewan Roughriders visit the BC Lions on Friday, September 25, at 10:30 p.m. ET. Only two points separate the teams in the West Division standings, and this third meeting will decide their season series. That tiebreaker could matter when playoff positions are settled.
Each team has won once. Saskatchewan took the first game 31–27, while BC answered with a 30–16 victory in their second meeting. Friday offers a deciding game between two clubs that have already shown they can beat each other.
Can BC keep its offence rolling?
The Lions enter with momentum. They have won six of their last seven games and scored 48 points against the Montréal Alouettes in their most recent outing. Quarterback Nathan Rourke has passed for more than 300 yards in six straight games, giving BC several ways to stretch a defence.
BC also has a threat on the ground in Zander Horvath. That balance makes the Lions difficult to defend: focusing too heavily on Rourke’s passing can create room for the running game, while stopping the run can leave receivers with favourable matchups.
Saskatchewan’s defence presents a serious test. The Roughriders have allowed an average of 26.2 points per game, the second-lowest figure in the CFL. If they can limit BC’s big plays and make the Lions work through long drives, Friday could look very different from BC’s high-scoring win over Montréal.
Saskatchewan needs a response on offence
The Roughriders’ last game ended in a 19–6 loss to Winnipeg. Six points was their lowest scoring total of the season, so the first question on Friday is whether Trevor Harris and the offence can get moving again.
There is reason to expect a stronger challenge. Running back AJ Ouellette and receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker are listed as available after injuries. In Saskatchewan’s first meeting with BC, Ouellette rushed for 69 yards and Schaffer-Baker caught 11 passes for 165 yards. Their return gives Harris more options than he had during the team’s recent injury-hit stretch.
The Riders do not necessarily need to match BC in a rapid scoring contest. Sustained drives would help their defence rest and keep Rourke off the field. Watch Saskatchewan’s early possessions: converting second downs and avoiding turnovers will be essential if the Riders want to control the pace.
What does the game mean for the standings?
Saskatchewan enters Friday ahead of BC in the West, but the gap is narrow. Since the teams split their first two meetings, the winner will also claim the head-to-head tiebreaker. It gives this late-season game an extra consequence beyond the points available in the standings.
The Roughriders also have a possible path to clinching a playoff berth this week, but it depends on other results as well as their own. Saskatchewan needs to beat BC and see both Winnipeg and Calgary lose.
Roughriders vs. Lions betting angles
BC’s offence makes the game total worth examining. Rourke’s recent passing production and the Lions’ 48-point performance against Montréal support a case for a high-scoring game. Saskatchewan’s strong defensive record supports the opposite case. Compare the posted total with both teams’ confirmed lineups before deciding whether either side offers value.
The point spread may be more appealing than picking a winner outright. These teams have split two games, and Saskatchewan has offensive players returning. If the market prices BC as a strong favourite because of its recent form, consider whether that price gives enough credit to the Riders’ defence and returning players.
A Rourke passing-yards prop is another market to check. He has cleared 300 yards in six consecutive games, but a streak alone does not make a bet worthwhile. The line still has to leave room for a strong Saskatchewan defence and the possibility that BC leans on its running game.
The matchup that could decide it
Friday’s contest may come down to Saskatchewan’s ability to sustain drives against BC’s ability to turn possessions into quick points. The Riders have the defence to slow the Lions and more offensive options available than they did recently. BC has home field, a productive offence and a chance to move level with Saskatchewan in the standings.
With the season-series tiebreaker on the line, this is one of Friday’s most consequential CFL games.
