William Nylander could hardly be entering tonight’s game in better form.
The Toronto Maple Leafs face the Utah Mammoth tonight at 9 p.m. ET at the Delta Center, with Toronto looking to finish its three-game road trip on another high.
The biggest storyline is Nylander.
The Maple Leafs star is coming off a spectacular five-point performance in Toronto’s 6-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche, scoring twice and adding three assists.
Now the question is simple: can Utah find a way to slow him down?
Nylander Is Already Driving Toronto’s Offence
Nylander’s performance against Colorado was one of his best games in a Maple Leafs jersey.
His two goals and three assists tied his career high with five points in a single game. The performance also pushed him past the 700-point mark for his NHL career.
More importantly for Toronto, Nylander has started the season in excellent form.
He enters tonight with five goals and 11 points, leading the Maple Leafs in both categories. His six assists are also tied with Auston Matthews for the team lead.
When Nylander is creating chances at this level, Toronto becomes much harder to defend.
Utah will know exactly where much of the danger is coming from tonight.
Maple Leafs Coming Off Their Best Win Yet
Toronto’s 6-3 victory over Colorado was an encouraging result against one of the NHL’s strongest teams.
Nylander led the way, but he was far from alone.
Auston Matthews also produced four points, while Toronto showed the kind of attacking depth that can make the Maple Leafs extremely dangerous when their top players are clicking.
The victory improved Toronto to 3-2-1, and the Leafs have now earned at least one point in three consecutive games.
A second straight strong road performance would give them even more momentum heading back to Toronto.
John Tavares Could Return Against Utah
Toronto could also receive another boost tonight.
John Tavares has rejoined the Maple Leafs in Utah after missing the Colorado game following the birth of his son.
His return would give Toronto another experienced scoring option and make life even more difficult for Utah defensively.
The Leafs already have Nylander and Matthews producing at a high level. Adding Tavares back into the lineup would strengthen their centre depth and power-play options.
Utah Mammoth Cannot Be Overlooked
Toronto may have momentum, but this is unlikely to be an easy night.
The Mammoth have started the season 4-2-0 and return home after going 3-2-0 on a five-game road trip.
Utah has also been one of the NHL’s most dangerous teams with the man advantage.
The Mammoth enter the game with a 40% power-play success rate, the best mark in the league, and have already scored 10 power-play goals.
That creates an obvious challenge for Toronto.
The Leafs cannot afford to spend too much time in the penalty box against a power play operating at that level.
Toronto’s Penalty Kill Could Decide the Game
Fortunately for the Maple Leafs, special teams have also been one of their biggest strengths.
Toronto has killed off 95% of its penalties, giving the Leafs the NHL’s best penalty kill entering tonight’s matchup.
That sets up one of the most interesting battles of the game:
Utah’s league-leading power play against Toronto’s league-leading penalty kill.
Whichever side wins that matchup could have a major influence on the final result.
Who Should Toronto Watch?
Utah’s attack is not built around just one player.
Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz have eight points each, while every one of Utah’s 19 skaters to appear this season has already recorded at least one point.
That depth means Toronto cannot simply concentrate on one line.
Schmaltz in particular has been one of the Mammoth’s biggest early-season threats and enters the matchup in excellent scoring form.
The Maple Leafs will need a disciplined defensive effort throughout the lineup.
Can Nylander Stay Hot?
That may ultimately be the biggest question surrounding Toronto tonight.
Nylander is playing with confidence, Matthews is producing alongside him, and the Leafs are coming off their most convincing victory of the young season.
But maintaining that momentum against a 4-2 Utah team with the NHL’s best power play will be a serious test.
Another big performance from Nylander could be enough to tip the matchup Toronto’s way.
After five points against Colorado, Maple Leafs fans will be watching closely to see what he can do for an encore.
