Maple Leafs vs Golden Knights Preview: Can Matthews and McKenna Stop Red-Hot Vegas?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are taking their biggest early-season test on the road.

Toronto visits the Vegas Golden Knights tonight, October 8, at 10 p.m. ET, opening a three-game Western road trip against a Vegas team that has quickly found its scoring touch.

But the timing might not be so bad for the Maple Leafs.

Toronto arrives in Las Vegas with momentum after completing a dramatic 5-4 overtime comeback against the Nashville Predators, erasing a 3-0 deficit before Auston Matthews delivered the winner.

Even more encouraging for Leafs fans, Gavin McKenna finally broke through.

The 18-year-old rookie scored his first NHL goal, recorded his first assist and produced the first multi-point performance of his young career.

Now Matthews and McKenna face a much tougher challenge.

Vegas has won back-to-back games and is coming off a dominant 6-2 victory over Seattle in which Jack Eichel and Tomas Hertl recorded four points each.

For Toronto, this could be an early indication of just how dangerous its new-look attack can become.

Maple Leafs vs Golden Knights Start Time

The Toronto Maple Leafs vs Vegas Golden Knights game takes place tonight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Date: Thursday, October 8, 2026
Start time: 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT
Location: T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas
Toronto record: 2-2-0
Vegas record: 3-1-0

Toronto begins the night fifth in the Atlantic Division, while Vegas returns home after sweeping its two-game Pacific Northwest road trip.

Toronto Arrives After an Incredible Comeback

For a while, Toronto’s previous game looked like one the Leafs would rather forget.

Nashville built a 3-0 advantage, putting Toronto in a difficult position before the Maple Leafs suddenly came alive.

John Tavares started the comeback before William Nylander and Gavin McKenna helped turn the game around.

Eventually, it was Matthews who finished it.

The Toronto captain scored with just 14 seconds remaining in overtime, completing a four-point night with one goal and three assists.

Toronto won 5-4.

It was exactly the type of performance the Leafs needed before leaving home for their first major road swing of the season.

But falling behind by three goals against Vegas could be much more difficult to recover from.

Auston Matthews Is Starting to Heat Up

The biggest positive from Toronto’s comeback was not simply the result.

It was Matthews looking like Matthews again.

His overtime winner against Nashville was the 430th goal of his NHL career, and his three assists gave him four points on the night.

Against Vegas, Toronto will need him involved from the opening faceoff.

The Golden Knights have enough firepower to punish defensive mistakes quickly, and Toronto cannot rely on another late comeback.

Matthews is therefore the obvious Maple Leafs player to watch tonight.

He remains Toronto’s most dangerous finisher, but his playmaking against Nashville was equally important. If Vegas focuses too much attention on shutting down his shot, Matthews has shown he can create opportunities for the players around him.

One of those players is suddenly becoming particularly interesting.

Gavin McKenna Is Starting to Make His Mark

Three games without a point was enough to create plenty of noise around Gavin McKenna.

Then everything changed against Nashville.

The No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft first assisted on Tavares’ goal before scoring the first goal of his NHL career later in the second period.

McKenna fired his shot into the top corner to pull Toronto within one.

It was the type of finish Leafs fans had been waiting to see.

More importantly, McKenna now heads into Vegas with some of the pressure removed.

Young players can often become more dangerous once that first NHL goal arrives. Instead of answering questions about when he will score, McKenna can focus on building chemistry with Toronto’s established stars.

Vegas will provide a very different challenge.

The Golden Knights are bigger, experienced and capable of turning mistakes into scoring opportunities almost immediately.

If McKenna produces another strong performance tonight, the conversation around his start to the season could change very quickly.

Why Vegas Could Be Toronto’s Toughest Test Yet

Vegas comes into this matchup looking dangerous.

After losing 4-3 to Anaheim earlier in the season, the Golden Knights responded with consecutive victories and most recently dismantled Seattle 6-2.

The worrying part for Toronto is how many different ways Vegas can score.

Against Seattle, the Golden Knights scored at even strength, on the power play and while shorthanded.

That means Toronto’s special teams discipline could become extremely important.

Giving Vegas unnecessary power plays is dangerous enough. Allowing Eichel, Hertl and Mark Stone to generate chances in transition would make the task even harder.

Toronto cannot afford another slow start.

Jack Eichel and Tomas Hertl Are the Vegas Players to Watch

If Matthews and McKenna are Toronto’s headline names, Jack Eichel and Tomas Hertl are the two players Leafs fans should be watching most closely at the other end.

Both produced four-point performances against Seattle.

Hertl scored twice and added two assists, while Eichel finished with a goal and three assists.

That combination presents Toronto with a difficult decision.

Focus too much defensive attention on Eichel and Hertl can exploit the space.

Collapse around Hertl and Eichel has the speed and vision to create something elsewhere.

Vegas also received two goals from Victor Olofsson against Seattle, although he left the game in the third period with a leg injury after being boarded. His availability is therefore another storyline worth watching before puck drop.

Who Is Most Likely to Score Tonight?

For Toronto, Auston Matthews remains the safest choice.

The Leafs captain is coming off his best performance of the young season and should once again receive plenty of opportunities in Toronto’s top attacking situations.

Gavin McKenna is the more intriguing option.

After scoring his first NHL goal, confidence should be high, and another goal against one of the Western Conference’s stronger teams would immediately increase the attention surrounding his rookie season.

For Vegas, Tomas Hertl is difficult to ignore after scoring twice against Seattle.

Jack Eichel is another obvious threat, particularly if Toronto gives Vegas opportunities on special teams or turns the puck over through the neutral zone.

Players to watch

Toronto: Auston Matthews, Gavin McKenna, William Nylander
Vegas: Jack Eichel, Tomas Hertl, Mark Stone

What Toronto Needs to Do to Beat Vegas

Toronto’s path to victory starts with avoiding another poor opening period.

The comeback against Nashville was impressive, but repeatedly chasing games is not sustainable.

The Leafs need to:

  • Keep Vegas away from dangerous special-teams opportunities

  • Limit turnovers when Eichel is on the ice

  • Get Matthews involved early

  • Continue building McKenna’s confidence

  • Protect the middle of the ice around their own net

  • Avoid allowing Vegas to dictate the game’s pace

The biggest question is whether Toronto can carry the energy from Tuesday’s comeback into its first road game of the trip.

Maple Leafs vs Golden Knights Prediction

This looks like Toronto’s most difficult matchup of the young season.

Vegas is 3-1-0, playing at home and receiving major production from Eichel, Hertl and its supporting cast. Toronto, meanwhile, has been inconsistent through its opening four games despite showing impressive resilience against Nashville.

The Leafs absolutely have enough offensive talent to make this competitive.

Matthews is coming off a four-point performance. Nylander has already been producing, and McKenna may finally be gaining confidence after his breakthrough game.

But Toronto cannot expect to fall three goals behind and escape again.

Vegas enters tonight with the stronger early-season form and has looked particularly dangerous when given special-teams opportunities.

Prediction: Golden Knights 4, Maple Leafs 3

Toronto should make it close, but Vegas gets the slight edge at home.

The bigger storyline, however, might be what happens between Matthews and McKenna.

If Toronto’s established superstar and its 18-year-old rookie can build on what they produced against Nashville, the Maple Leafs may have found one of the most exciting combinations to watch in Canadian hockey this season.
