Hurricanes vs Canadiens Preview: Can Montreal Win Its 2026-27 Home Opener?

The Montreal Canadiens return to the Bell Centre on Tuesday, October 6, for one of their most anticipated early-season games.

Montreal hosts the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m. ET in its 2026-27 home opener, and this is much more than a normal October matchup. The game is also a rematch of the 2026 Eastern Conference Final, where Carolina eliminated Montreal on its way to winning the Stanley Cup.

For the Canadiens, it is an early opportunity to make a statement in front of their home crowd. For Carolina, it is another chance to show why the defending Stanley Cup champions remain one of the NHL’s toughest teams.

Key storyline Rematch of the 2026 Eastern Conference Final

The combination of a home opener, playoff history and two talented teams makes this one of the most interesting NHL games for Canadian fans this week.

Why the 2026 Eastern Conference Final Rematch Matters

Montreal’s run to the Eastern Conference Final was one of the biggest stories of the 2026 playoffs.

But Carolina ultimately proved too strong.

The Hurricanes won the series in five games, finishing it with a convincing 6-1 victory in Game 5 to reach the Stanley Cup Final. Carolina later completed the journey by winning the championship.

That playoff result gives Tuesday’s game a little more meaning.

It will not erase what happened in May, but Montreal now gets to face the defending champions in front of its own fans. A strong performance would be an early indication that the Canadiens are ready to take another step this season.

Montreal Enters the Game After a Wild Loss to Pittsburgh

Montreal’s most recent game showed both the best and worst sides of this young Canadiens team.

The Canadiens fell 6-5 in overtime to the Pittsburgh Penguins after finding themselves down 5-1 during the second period.

Instead of allowing the game to get away from them, Montreal produced a huge comeback.

Nick Suzuki finished with one goal and three assists, while Cole Caufield scored twice. Lane Hutson added three assists as Montreal eventually forced overtime with two goals in the final 68 seconds.

The comeback was impressive.

The defensive performance was not.

Montreal cannot expect to give Carolina the same type of advantage and recover again.

What Montreal Needs to Fix Against Carolina

The biggest priority is simple: the Canadiens need a better start.

Going down by four goals against Pittsburgh forced Montreal to spend most of the night chasing the game.

Against Carolina, that could be much more difficult.

The Hurricanes are built to pressure opponents, control possession and make teams work for every scoring opportunity. Montreal therefore needs to be sharper from the opening faceoff.

Three areas will be especially important:

  • Avoiding defensive turnovers

  • Keeping Carolina away from dangerous scoring areas

  • Staying disciplined and limiting unnecessary penalties

Montreal has enough offensive talent to create chances. The question is whether it can remain composed defensively for all three periods.

Canadiens Players to Watch

Nick Suzuki

Suzuki may be the most important Montreal player in this matchup.

The Canadiens captain is coming off a four-point performance against Pittsburgh, with one goal and three assists.

His ability to control possession, create chances and connect Montreal’s top offensive players will be crucial against Carolina.

If Montreal is going to win its home opener, Suzuki will probably need to be involved.

Cole Caufield

Caufield remains Montreal’s biggest pure scoring threat.

He scored twice against Pittsburgh, showing once again why opposing teams cannot give him much space around the offensive zone.

Carolina’s defence will know exactly where he is whenever Montreal enters the attacking zone.

Even so, Caufield needs only one clean opportunity to change a game.

Lane Hutson

Hutson could also make a major difference.

The young defenceman recorded three assists against Pittsburgh and continues to give Montreal another dangerous playmaker from the blue line.

His puck movement could be particularly valuable against Carolina’s aggressive forecheck.

Carolina Players Montreal Must Watch

Carolina enters the season as the defending Stanley Cup champion, which immediately makes the Hurricanes one of the NHL’s teams to beat.

Montreal cannot focus on only one player.

Carolina’s strength comes from its depth, structure and ability to attack in waves. The Hurricanes can create pressure with multiple lines, while their defence is comfortable moving the puck quickly out of its own zone.

That depth was one of the reasons Carolina was able to eliminate Montreal last spring.

Who Is Most Likely to Score for Montreal?

Cole Caufield is the strongest candidate.

Caufield is Montreal’s most natural finisher and already enters this matchup with momentum after scoring twice against Pittsburgh.

A home opener should also bring plenty of energy inside the Bell Centre.

If Montreal can generate power-play opportunities or create traffic in front of Carolina’s goal, Caufield should have several chances to add another goal.

Likely Montreal scorer: Cole Caufield

Nick Suzuki would be the next player to watch, particularly if Montreal’s top line generates sustained offensive-zone pressure.

The Goaltending Matchup Could Decide the Game

Montreal allowed six goals against Pittsburgh, so goaltending and team defence will naturally receive plenty of attention.

Jakub Dobes made 24 saves in that overtime defeat.

But this cannot simply become a discussion about the goalie.

Montreal’s defenders and forwards also need to reduce the quality of the opportunities Carolina creates.

Against the defending champions, giving up repeated odd-man rushes or uncontested chances around the crease could quickly turn the game.

Whoever starts in goal for Montreal will need considerably more help than the Canadiens provided against Pittsburgh.

Can Montreal Beat Carolina?

Yes, but Montreal will probably need a much cleaner performance than it produced Saturday.

The Canadiens have already shown that they can score.

Suzuki, Caufield, Hutson and Ivan Demidov give Montreal enough creativity to cause problems for almost any opponent.

The bigger concern is preventing games from becoming too chaotic.

Carolina has the experience and depth to punish those mistakes.

That gives the Hurricanes a slight advantage on paper, especially after winning the Stanley Cup last season.

However, the Bell Centre should be extremely loud for Montreal’s first home game of the season.

That atmosphere could help the Canadiens start with much more intensity.

Hurricanes vs Canadiens Prediction

This looks like a game that could remain close deep into the third period.

Montreal’s offence is dangerous enough to challenge Carolina, but the Canadiens cannot afford another slow defensive start.

Carolina’s championship experience gives the Hurricanes the safer overall profile.

Prediction: Hurricanes 4, Canadiens 3

Player most likely to score for Montreal: Cole Caufield

Player to watch: Nick Suzuki

Montreal’s best chance will be to keep the game controlled early, get Caufield involved and use the energy of the Bell Centre crowd to put Carolina under pressure.

Final Thoughts

The Canadiens could hardly ask for a more interesting home opener.

Montreal gets the defending Stanley Cup champions, a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference Final and an immediate chance to test itself against one of the NHL’s best teams.

The Canadiens’ comeback against Pittsburgh showed how dangerous their offence can be.

Tuesday’s game will show whether they can combine that firepower with the defensive discipline needed to beat a championship-calibre opponent.

If Montreal can avoid falling behind early, the Hurricanes vs Canadiens home opener could become one of the best NHL games of the young season.
