Chelsea welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, 30 August 2026, for one of the most interesting matches of the Premier League weekend. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 Malta time.
Both teams started the new league season with victories, but they did so in very different circumstances. Chelsea edged past Fulham 3-2 in an entertaining opening match, while Brighton produced one of the performances of the first weekend by defeating Aston Villa 4-0.
With Chelsea adjusting to life under Xabi Alonso and Brighton arriving in excellent form, this meeting should provide goals, tactical intrigue and several individual battles worth following.
Chelsea have made an encouraging start under Xabi Alonso. The Blues followed their league victory over Fulham with a 2-0 win against Luton Town in the League Cup, giving Alonso a successful first competitive appearance at Stamford Bridge.
Danny Welbeck opened the scoring against Luton on his Chelsea debut, while Estêvão Willian helped create the second goal. Cole Palmer also completed the full match, although he is still expected to retain his place against Brighton.
The main challenge for Chelsea will be controlling the game without leaving too much space behind their midfield. Alonso’s preferred system asks the wing-backs to move forward and support the attack, but Brighton are particularly dangerous when they recover possession and attack the spaces out wide.
Cole Palmer and João Pedro should be central to Chelsea’s attacking approach. Palmer can move between midfield and Brighton’s defensive line, while former Brighton forward João Pedro offers mobility, intelligent movement and the ability to combine with teammates around the penalty area.
Morgan Rogers could also play an important role. His direct running gives Chelsea another way to break through a Brighton defence that may be comfortable against slower, more predictable possession.
Brighton could hardly have asked for a better start to their Premier League campaign. Their 4-0 victory over Aston Villa demonstrated the speed, intensity and attacking variety that Fabian Hürzeler’s side can produce.
Jack Hinshelwood scored twice during a remarkable opening period in which Brighton registered all four of their goals inside the first 31 minutes. The result continued a strong sequence in which Brighton recorded four victories and a draw across their previous five matches in all competitions.
Pascal Groß’s return has added experience and creativity to Brighton’s midfield. His passing range can help the visitors escape Chelsea’s pressure, while Georginio Rutter provides movement and physical strength in attack.
Brighton are unlikely to sit deep and simply protect their penalty area. Their confidence comes from pressing opponents, winning the ball in advanced areas and committing several players to attacks. That approach carries risks at Stamford Bridge, but it could also expose a Chelsea side still becoming comfortable with Alonso’s tactical demands.
Chelsea are monitoring the fitness of Moisés Caicedo. The midfielder missed the victories over Fulham and Luton after suffering an injury in training, but Alonso hopes he will be available to face his former club.
Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda are expected to return to training, while Wesley Fofana is available again after suspension. Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra remain sidelined.
There is also uncertainty surrounding Chelsea’s goalkeeper and midfield selections. Alonso has reportedly decided who will start in goal but has not publicly revealed his choice. Enzo Fernández’s involvement is another question following his absence from the League Cup squad amid transfer speculation.
Brighton have concerns of their own. Yankuba Minteh, Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson are among those expected to miss the match, while Kaoru Mitoma’s availability remains uncertain. These absences could reduce Brighton’s attacking options, particularly in the wide positions.
Chelsea could start in a 3-4-2-1 formation:
Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Acheampong; Gusto, Caicedo, James, Chavarría; Palmer, Rogers; João Pedro
Caicedo’s fitness will influence the final selection. If he is unavailable, Romeo Lavia could start in central midfield.
Brighton are likely to use a 4-2-3-1:
Verbruggen; Wieffer, Vuskovic, Dunk, Boscagli; Groß, Ayari; Gómez, Hinshelwood, De Cuyper; Rutter
The visitors may adjust their wide positions depending on Mitoma’s fitness.
The most important part of the match could be Chelsea’s ability to play through Brighton’s pressure. Brighton will attempt to prevent the home side from building comfortably and force Chelsea’s defenders into hurried passes.
If Caicedo plays, his composure and familiarity with Brighton’s style could be extremely valuable. Reece James may also move inside from wing-back to give Chelsea an additional passing option in midfield.
Brighton, however, will believe they can create chances from Chelsea turnovers. Groß and Hinshelwood have the technical quality to move the ball forward quickly, while Rutter can occupy the central defenders and open space for runners arriving from midfield.
At the other end, Palmer’s positioning could cause problems for Brighton. If he receives the ball behind Brighton’s midfield, Chelsea should be able to create opportunities for João Pedro and Rogers.
Chelsea have home advantage and enough attacking quality to trouble Brighton, but the visitors enter the game in stronger form and have recently enjoyed considerable success in this fixture. Brighton have won the last four meetings between the clubs, scoring three goals in each of the previous three.
The visitors’ willingness to attack should make this an open match. Chelsea can exploit the space Brighton leave behind, but Alonso’s side may also struggle to contain Brighton’s quick transitions.
Chelsea’s midweek League Cup match could become another factor during the second half. Although Alonso rotated parts of his squad, Palmer played all 90 minutes, and Brighton may be the fresher team during the closing stages.
A home victory would not be surprising, especially if Palmer and João Pedro find space around Brighton’s penalty area. Nevertheless, Brighton’s confidence, recent record against Chelsea and impressive opening performance make them difficult to oppose.
Final prediction: Chelsea 2-2 Brighton
Likely outcome: Draw
Goals prediction: Both teams to score
Alternative prediction: Over 2.5 total goals
