Alouettes Look to Extend East Division Grip as Tiger-Cats Come to Town

CFL fans across the country have circled this one for weeks. On Sunday night, the East Division’s top two teams meet again as the Montreal Alouettes host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a game that could go a long way toward deciding who sits atop the standings come playoff time.

Montreal enters on a three-game winning streak and sits comfortably in first place at 5-1. Hamilton, meanwhile, is right behind them at 3-3 after snapping a two-game skid last week with a hard-fought 24-23 win over Toronto. A Montreal victory would push their divisional lead to six points and — just as importantly — lock up the season series over the Ticats, a tiebreaker that could matter a great deal when the standings get sorted out in November.

The Storylines

The two clubs have already given fans a taste of what’s at stake. Their first meeting this season went to overtime, with Montreal escaping 30-27. A repeat performance wouldn’t shock anyone who watched that game, but on paper the Alouettes look like the healthier, hotter team heading into Sunday.

That’s largely down to Davis Alexander, who has quietly put together one of the best stretches by a quarterback in the league this year. He’s topped 300 passing yards in every single start this season, leads the CFL in passing yards (2,181) and 30-plus-yard completions (17), and has yet to throw an interception through six games while piling up 11 touchdown passes. His top target, Tyson Philpot, has been just as dominant on the other end of those throws — he leads the league in targets (64), catches (50) and receiving yards (807). When Montreal’s offence is clicking, it’s clicking through those two.

Hamilton’s story is a little more complicated. Starting pivot Bo Levi Mitchell remains sidelined after ankle surgery, which means the Ticats will once again lean on Canadian backup Tre Ford. Ford impressed in relief last week, throwing for 218 yards and adding 109 yards on the ground against Toronto — a dual-threat performance that gives Hamilton fans some reason for optimism. The catch: Ford is 0-2 in his career against Montreal, and he’ll be doing it again without a fully healthy offensive line, which has been a growing concern for the Tabbies in recent weeks.

What to Expect

If the betting markets are any indication, this could be a shootout. Montreal opened as roughly a 10.5 to 11.5-point favourite, and the total sits at a lofty 56.5 — one of the higher totals on the CFL slate this season. That number isn’t a fluke: the Over has hit in six straight Alouettes games overall and four straight at home, a reflection of just how potent Montreal’s passing attack has been at Percival Molson.

Don’t be surprised, though, if Hamilton keeps this closer than the spread suggests. The Ticats have covered in five straight Week 8 matchups historically, and Ford’s legs give Hamilton a way to manufacture points even if the aerial attack lags behind Montreal’s. Expect Hamilton’s defence to try to speed up the tempo, force a few turnovers, and lean on special teams to steal field position — the margins they’ll need if they want to hang with an Alouettes offence humming on all cylinders.

Prediction

On paper, this looks like Montreal’s game to lose. Alexander and Philpot give the Alouettes a top-end passing combination that few teams in the league can match right now, and they’ll be doing it at home in front of a crowd that smells a statement win. Hamilton’s resilience and Ford’s dual-threat ability make a backdoor cover plausible, but expect Montreal to pull away in the fourth quarter and take control of the East.

Prediction: Montreal 34, Hamilton 24 — a fourth straight win for the Als, and a season sweep of their closest divisional rival heading into the back half of the schedule.
