Artificial intelligence is changing the way fans analyze football, and now several major AI tools have weighed in on one of the sport’s biggest questions: who will win the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
In a prediction exercise featuring Grok, ChatGPT and Gemini, the three AI systems were asked to forecast several major categories for the upcoming tournament, including the surprise team, biggest disappointment, best young player, top scorer, finalists and eventual champion. While the predictions varied in many categories, one country stood out when it came time to choose the likely World Cup winner: France.
The 2026 tournament will be unlike any World Cup before it. Hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the competition will expand to 48 teams, creating a longer, more demanding path to the trophy. That format could reward nations with deep squads, tactical flexibility and experience in high-pressure knockout matches. According to the AI predictions, those factors strongly favour France.
Both ChatGPT and Gemini selected France as the predicted 2026 World Cup champion. Their reasoning was built around squad depth, elite talent and recent tournament pedigree.
France has been one of the most consistent international teams of the modern era. After winning the 2018 World Cup and reaching the final again in 2022, the French national team has proven it can handle the pressure of major tournaments. By 2026, many of its key players are expected to be either in their prime or close to it.
At the centre of France’s case is Kylian Mbappé, who was also unanimously predicted by the AI systems to finish as the tournament’s top scorer. Mbappé already has a remarkable World Cup record. In 2022, he scored eight goals and delivered a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. With the expanded format potentially allowing title contenders to play up to eight matches, an elite forward like Mbappé could have even more opportunities to dominate.
France’s strength, however, goes beyond one superstar. The squad combines speed, physical power, technical quality and tournament experience. That balance makes France one of the most difficult teams to eliminate. Gemini also predicted French goalkeeper Mike Maignan could be the best goalkeeper of the tournament, pointing to his reflexes, reach, footwork and ability to deliver in crucial moments.
While France received two votes as champion, Grok predicted Spain would lift the trophy. Spain was described as a team with the technical structure and tactical control needed to go all the way.
Spain’s case is especially interesting because of its mix of youth and experience. The team has a new generation capable of pressing aggressively, controlling possession and attacking from multiple areas of the pitch. Rather than depending on one superstar, Spain can dominate through collective movement and midfield control.
All three AI systems also agreed that Spain’s Lamine Yamal could be the best young player of the 2026 World Cup. Despite being only 18 by the time of the tournament, Yamal is already considered one of football’s most exciting young talents. His one-on-one ability, creativity and maturity make him a serious candidate to become one of the breakout stars of the competition.
If Spain can handle physical opponents and tight knockout matches, the AI analysis suggests they could be a genuine threat to France’s title hopes.
The AI predictions also highlighted several countries that could create major storylines in 2026.
For the surprise team of the tournament, Grok selected Morocco, ChatGPT chose Japan and Gemini picked Colombia. Morocco’s case is built on its historic run to the semi-finals in 2022, where it eliminated Spain and Portugal. Japan was praised for its continued development and ability to compete with European giants, while Colombia was identified as a dangerous side with players such as Luis Díaz entering their prime.
When asked which team nobody would want to face, Grok chose the Netherlands, citing their physical strength, experience and balance across the squad. ChatGPT and Gemini both selected Uruguay, mainly because of Marcelo Bielsa’s intense tactical style. Uruguay’s high pressing, direct play and relentless energy could make them a nightmare opponent in knockout football.
The AI systems also predicted possible disappointments. Grok named Brazil, pointing to recent inconsistency and defensive issues despite the country’s rich football history and individual talent.
ChatGPT and Gemini both chose England as the biggest potential disappointment, not because England lacks quality, but because expectations are so high. With star players across attack, midfield and defence, an early exit would feel like a major failure. England’s challenge will be turning individual talent into tournament success.
All three AI systems agreed on the most anticipated possible matchup: Argentina versus Portugal.
The reason is obvious. Such a match could bring Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo together on the World Cup stage one final time. Argentina would enter as defending champions, while Portugal would bring a strong generation featuring names such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leão and Vitinha.
For many fans, Argentina against Portugal would be more than a football match. It would be a historic moment involving two of the greatest players ever.
After reviewing all categories, France appears to be the AI favourite to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The combination of Mbappé’s scoring power, Maignan’s goalkeeping quality, squad depth and recent tournament experience gives France one of the strongest profiles in the competition.
Spain remains a serious challenger, especially if its young stars continue to develop. Portugal, Argentina, England, Brazil, Uruguay and the Netherlands could also shape the tournament in major ways.
But according to the AI predictions, the most likely 2026 World Cup winner is France — a team built not only to compete, but to survive the longest and most demanding World Cup format in history.
